February 4, 2012: Shyness is Now a Mental Illness, Germs, Camp Bow Wow, and Alternative Communal Living

shynessIn his new book Shyness: How Normal Behavior Became a Sickness, Dr. Christopher Lane explores how ordinary shyness became a mental disorder, and the long-range consequences of the diagnosis. Dr. Lane is the author of five books and is a teaching professor at Northwestern University. He also writes a blog for Psychology Today and is a regular writer for The Huffington Post.

Joining us to talk about our germiest habits and the germiest places  (sometimes even in our own homes!)  is Leslie Reichert, a nationally recognized green home-keeping expert AKA "The Cleaning Coach".   Leslie was recently featured in Spry Living Magazine and offered some terrific tips!

To cater to the guilt-ridden pet owner, day care for dogs is springing up all over the place!  One of the more exclusive doggie day cares is Camp Bow Wow, which has 110 "camps" all over the country and Dacia Haines, Communications Director refers to their clients as "campers."

There are a growing number of boomer-age women who are turning to alternative living arrangements, with the goal of saving money and a renewed sense of connection and community.  There are many variations on this idea, but all involve a communal living style where women, and sometimes men, live together, either in group homes or their own apartments or houses, and share resources, services AND mutual support.  Marianne Kilkenny is a consultant and educator who works with groups and individuals looking for alternative communities as they age.
